Things you didn’t know you could claim on your tradies’ insurance

Did you know that an insurance adviser’s role doesn’t stop after you take out your policy? Besides getting them to perform regular reviews of your cover, you should also contact your broker immediately if you need to make a claim. At Certus, we’ve helped our clients process hundreds of insurance claims, and they are often surprised at what their cover includes – things they would never have known to claim for if we hadn’t been involved.

If you’ve got tradies’ insurance, you’re probably aware that it covers things like theft and accidental damage of your vehicle and your tools. However, there are many other events that you can insure against and claim for. Here are some examples.

  • You’re doing excavation work at a site, and the vibration damages the neighbouring property when it causes a retaining wall to collapse. The property owner sues you for damages. You could claim for this under general liability cover.

  • You install the plumbing in a new house and fail to seal a pipe properly. The resulting leak does thousands of dollars worth of damage to the home, for which you are liable. You could claim for this if you have a faulty workmanship extension on your liability cover.

  • Your apprentice falls off a ladder and breaks his arm in several places, requiring surgery and a long time off work. You are judged to be liable because you didn’t provide the correct ladder for the job, putting your employee at risk. He takes you to court to claim compensation for the lost income that ACC doesn’t cover. You could claim against employer’s liability insurance to cover your legal fees and reparation costs.

  • Your business vehicle is involved in an accident that destroys the side panels. Under your business motor vehicle cover, you could claim the cost of the panel beating and also the cost of having your signwriting re-done.

  • You decide you need to claim for something that happened a little while ago. At the time it didn’t seem necessary, but now you wish you had. If you kept detailed evidence of the event, you might be able to backdate your claim.

So, if the unthinkable happens, pick up the phone and contact your Certus broker. We can help you to prepare and submit your claim, and we’ll liaise with your insurance company to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. It’s all part of the service.
